چکیده

In creating interconnection networks for parallel computers an efficient design is crucial because of its impact on the performance. A high speed routing scheme that minimises contention and avoids the formation of hot-spots should be included. We have developed a new method to uniformly balance communication traffic over the interconnection network called Distributed Routing Balancing (DRB) based on limited and load-controlled path expansion in order to maintain low message latency. DRB defines how to create alternative paths to expand single paths (expanded path definition) and when to use them depending on traffic load (expanded path selection). Evaluation in terms of latency and bandwidth is presented. Some conclusions and comparisons with existing methods are given. It is demonstrated that DRB is a method to effectively balance network traffic.

Routing Strategies and Message Contention on Low-dimensional Interconnection Networks

Non-uniform message distribution in interconnection networks is a common problem and causes network congestion. This paper proves that a careful choice of the routing algorithm can increase signiicantly the communication performance under pathological communication patterns, such as hot spots. A comparison between widely used e-cube routing and a new algorithm based on Computer Graphics line dr...

Hot-Spots and Message Combining in An Interconnection Network for Broadcast Communication

Due to advances in fiber-optics and VLSI technology, interconnection networks which allow multiple simultaneous broadcasts are becoming feasible. In such large systems hot-spot contention can occur when several processors concurrently request access to one data structure with resulting severe performance degradation. To minimize the effect of hot-spots in the broadcast architecture, messages ar...

A Novel Approach to Improve the Performance of Interconnection Networks with Hot - Spots

Congestion in interconnection networks due to the presence of hot spots is an important and di cult problem that occurs in parallel machines. This problem has been studied in depth and di erent solutions for the case of multiprocessors with shared memory have been proposed. Current trends point towards the implementation of systems with physically distributed memory, either based on message pas...

Comparative Performance Evaluation of Hot Spot Contention Between MIN-Based and Ring-Based Shared-Memory Architectures

Hot spot content ion on a network-based sharedmemory architecture occurs when a large number of processors try to access a globally shared variable across the network. While Multistage Interconnection Network (MIN) and Hierarchical Ring (HR) structures are two important bases on which to build large scale shared-memory multiprocessors, the different interconnection networks and cache/memory sys...
